Frequently Asked Questions

What is hypnobirthing?

Hypnobirthing is science! There's a reason it's becoming more and more popular, as hypnobirthing is being in tune with your instincts for  birth (and beyond), making informed and confident decisions for your birth, having a supportive and useful birth partner and having a positive birth, whichever way it goes. There's more info on the 'What is Hypnobirthing' page above.

What's included in the antenatal hypnobirthing classes?

Everything for a positive birth, support in pregnancy and beyond...plus snacks! My antenatal Hypnobirthing courses are for the birthing person and their birth partner - you don't have to do the usual NCT course. I teach The Little Birth Company Hypnobirthing programme. I am also able to signpost you to support services in the local area and support you after your birth; I really do care. Please see the list on the courses page for what is included in the course. Cake and tea is also included because that's really important!

Where do I find out more information about hypnobirthing?

There is a wealth of accurate (and not so accurate!) information online. Have a look at my 'What is hypnobirthing' page, and you can also book in for your free 15 min discovery call to find out more. It's probably a lot more than you think it is.

When should I start a hypnobirthing course?

This class is ideal if you are 20 weeks+ so you can spend time practicing techniques and really changing your mindset. However please contact me should you be earlier or later on in your pregnancy and we can have a chat. You don't have to do the usual NCT course. My complete courses are a full antenatal course, and the group courses are set up for you to socialise and meet your community. I don't just teach and run - you get my knowledge and support as long as you need it. I also run regular 'mummy walkie talkies'.

Is hypnobirthing only for your first birth?

Hypnobirthing is for your first or next baby! I've taught a lot of first time parents, but also a lot of second,  third and fourth timers. You can do hypnobirthing for any birth. It's also for any birth - planning a home birth, birthing at the midwife led unit or the labour ward and also caesarean birth.

Is Hypnobirthing for me?

You may be a bit put off by the 'hypno' bit, and when I first heard of hypnobirthing, I was too. But I'm not a hippy, and Hypnobirthing is knowledge about what happens so you're not fearful of birth. You'll have a positive birth however you birth your baby. If you'd like a call to talk through it then please pop book this via the link.

Does hypnobirthing work in NHS?

Hypnobirthing is for any birth, wherever and however you birth. You can use hypnobirthing techniques in any setting, including in an NHS birth setting.

Should my birth partner attend antenatal hypnobirthing classes?

Yes absolutely! My classes are for the birth team. You'll learn how the birth partner can support the birthing person, and it is important for the team to understand how hypnobirthing works.

Where do you teach hypnobirthing classes in Wokingham?

I have a dedicated Hub at Moss End Garden Village in Berkshire but if you’d prefer to have classes in your own home I cover areas of Berkshire, North Hampshire, East Surrey and South Oxfordshire, including Crowthorne, Twyford, Henley on Thames, Windsor, Slough, Bracknell, Camberley, Woking, Reading and Basingstoke and further (but may request travel costs). Clients are under Royal Berkshire Hospital and Frimley Park Hospital. I also offer classes online!

I've previously had a traumatic birth. Is hypnobirthing right for my birth?

I had a traumatic birth with my first child. As soon as I came out of hospital I said if I were ever to give birth again, I would chose a homebirth and really commit to hypnobirthing.  I did, and I had a very positive second birth experience because of hypnobirthing. Of course, I can't make any promises but if hypnobirthing is for you, then I'm here for you

Can I learn hypnobirthing on my own?

You can learn about hypnobirthing in books, online generic courses, listening to hypnosis tracks or podcasts. Courses with A Mother World are focussed on you, your pregnancy and your birth. Hypnobirthing is also more likely to make a real difference to you if you attend a personalised course, and have the support from your teacher. You can watch a video, whilst scrolling on your phone or folding the washing, but your full focus probably won't be on it…I speak from experience here! All education helps in birth though - knowledge is power! I also offer access to the client area website, where there's a huge amount of local information to support your birth and beyond. You also get my support whenever you need me, to share knowlegde or signpost you to local services.

Is hypnobirthing less painful?

In courses you'll understand the fear - tension - pain syndrome. This helps get the oxygen to the working muscles in  birth (uterus) and in turn may help pain. If you are tense, the blood goes to your vital organs, and your body is likely to go in to fight or flight mode.

How painful is childbirth?

Pain in birth is different for everyone and depends on the tools you have to cope with the pain! Hypnobirthing tools and techniques help you to stay calm and relaxed to allow the birthing muscles (uterus) to work efficiently. This doesn't mean you won't experience pain, and hypnobirthing isn't no drugs!

Is hypnobirthing no pain relief?

No! Hypnobirthing teaches you tools to relax in birth, how your mind affects your body, your hormones and natural pain relief (endorphins), and also to make your informed decisions to make your decisions for you. You'll learn what pain relief options you have so you can research and plan ahead.

What is pregnancy relaxation?

If you're looking for a way to relax in pregnancy, the pregnancy relaxation classes are for you. Taking time out of your busy week to chat, relax and practice birth breathing, learn how your body works during pregnancy and birth, and connect with your intuition, your baby and other mums to be. It is pure bliss, with no expectations.
